Welcome to our organization and to this dojo.  Shotokan is an Okinawan based style of karate. It is one of the five principal styles namely Shotokan, Shitoryu, Gojuryu, Shukukai and Kyokushinkai. It was founded in 1922 by Gichin Funakoshi. Inessence, karate was developed by people who literally had to fight for their lives. For this reason techniques had to be very effective, extremely fast and very versatile. To be capable of inflicting devastating damage on an opponent with one blow of the fist or a single kick has been the objective of this ancient Okinawan martial art. Today we benefit from the many qualities karate provides such as well balanced fitness and conditioning, physically as well as mentally. It teaches discipline, confidence and to know ones own character and physical limits.

Conquer the mind to conquer the body

Karate for children  Studies have shown that children that participate in karate have an increased sense of responsibility, a decrease in willingness to take foolish risks, have a higher confidence and self-esteem. *A reward system improves your child’s self-esteem. The belt system in karate is the key starting point. At Saska belts are earned and never given away. An invitation to test is no guarantee of passing. Students must show focus, discipline and have a high standard of karate. This instills a great sense of accomplishment and confidence in our students.

Tournaments  Another key ingredient to building confidence and self-esteem are tournaments. Tournaments let a student see if they can perform their best at a stressful situation and also to compare their skill with others at their level and to improve from what they have learned. Attending tournaments are highly recommended but not required.
